Mozilla reportedly testing its first-ever Forefox OS tablet prototype

Mozilla has begun testing its Firefox OS on tablets and has developed its own tablet prototype.
Mozilla reportedly testing its first-ever Forefox OS tablet prototype
We might soon see the first Firefox OS tablet, as Mozilla has already started testing the browser based OS on tablets and has finished developing one of the prototypes. As of now, the Firefox OS runs only on smartphones, making this the first time the OS will be shown on a big screen device.
The tablet doesn't seem to be a high end device by any means, specs released say it will feature a 10-inch display, 1200x800 display, 2GB of RAM along with 16GB of in-built storage coupled with a 1GHz quad-core processor.
In this day and age of high DPI's, it seems Mozilla's mission is to go after emerging markets. Mozilla also announced that its Firefox OS equipped smartphones will not be coming to the US in the near future, as they might be planning to focus on markets that are price sensitive, where smartphone and tablet saturation isn't as high as we see in developed markets.
Asa Dotzler, Mozilla's director of Firefox OS participation, wrote in a blog post, "We have to make the hardware available before the software is final to make it possible for contributors around the world to help us complete the build of Firefox OS for tablets."
Mozilla also hinted at CES 2014 that the company may launch new wearable devices as well. "As the internet comes to your wrist, your car and your TV, Mozilla would like to see the web principles of openness and a level playing field in these areas, too," Mozilla said in a statement.

Apple iPhone 6 with 4.7-inch display to release in June: Rumours

Reports claim that Apple has already started working on a new iPhone and that it might announce it at the WWDC in June
Apple iPhone 6 with 4.7-inch display to release in June: Rumours
The world was amazed when Steve Jobs had unveiled the first iPhone back in June 2007. It was and has been a revolutionary product and every year, Apple fans expect a newer and better version of the smartphone. Well rumours have already started flooding in and according to a Chinese analyst Sun Chyang Xu, Apple is planning to announce the new iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display this June.
The display will have the same resolution as of the iPhone 5S (1136x640) which is kind of disappointing in a world where 4K display equipped smartphones are starting to emerge. The production of the new iPhone is expected to start in the month of May. Earlier rumours claimed that Apple will launch a 5.7 inch iPhone with a higher resolution display. Now, this could mean that this year we might see two different sized versions of the iPhone 6 (fingers crossed).
Apple has already announced this year’s WWDC scheduled for June 10th which perfectly coincides with the timeframe when the first four iPhones were announced in the past.
We personally think that Apple was doing it right with the 4 inch display on the iPhone. A larger display would not only mean higher production values, but would also lead to higher capacity batteries. All in all, we are keen to see what the next gen iPhone has to offer.

Google removes two Chrome extensions for displaying pop-up ads

Two extensions disabled from the Chrome Web Store after their code is altered to display pop-up ads to users.
Google removes two Chrome extensions for displaying pop-up ads
Google has removed two Chrome extensions that were displaying pop-up ads to its users. This comes after the search engine announced that the it will be removing some toolbars and other "multipurpose extensions" out of the Chrome Web Store to keep its browser's interface uncluttered .
Google has removed the two extensions, "Add to Feedly" and "Tweet This Page," after getting complaints from users about the ads. Google stated that the extensions have been removed as they violated the company's Terms of Service.
"Do not create an extension that requires users to accept bundles of unrelated functionality, such as an email notifier and a news headline aggregator. If two pieces of functionality are clearly separate, they should be put into two different extensions, and users should have the ability to install and uninstall them separately," Google wrote in its updated Chrome Web Store developer policies. "For example, functionality that displays product ratings and reviews, but also injects ads into web pages, should not be bundled into a single extension."
Amit Agarwal, the developer behind the ‘Add to Feedly’ extension stated that he sold it for a four-figure sum but now regrets it as the new owners of the extension pushed an update to the Chrome store that “incorporated advertising into the extension.”
Agarwal stated, “These aren’t regular banner ads that you see on web pages, these are invisible ads that work the background and replace links on every website that you visit into affiliate links. In simple English, if the extension is activated in Chrome, it will inject adware into all web pages.”
Google added although its is not against the company's rules to include ad codes but developers have to comply with the company's extension policies of having one functionality.
Google Chrome for mobile received a major update which will lead to data savings for users by up to 50 percent. The new update brings data compressions, Google Translate and app shortcuts for Chrome mobile users. Users can get the new update through "Settings” > “Bandwidth management” > “Reduce data usage" and turn the toggle to “On.” Users will also be able to track the data saving each month from the app.

Samsung Galaxy S5 to feature fingerprint scanner, skips iris scan: Reports

Samsung has reportedly shelved plans for iris scanner in its forthcoming smartphone Galaxy S5, but will concentrate on fingerprint scanner technology.
Samsung Galaxy S5 to feature fingerprint scanner, skips iris scan: Reports
Samsung has reportedly abandoned plans to add iris scanner in its forthcoming flagship smartphone, Galaxy S 5. Reports suggest the company will rather focus on the fingerprint scan technology in the next flagship.
Samsung, however, is reportedly testing different types of biometric scanners, but has given up on the “unintuitive user experience of iris recognition”. “Who would want to put their handset up close to their eyes for authentication in places like movie theaters and bed, or even while they are driving?,” Koreanherald quotes an industry source as saying.
“In order to enable iris recognition on a smartphone, an extra camera designed specifically for the identification technology should be installed, which will make the smartphone bigger since there will be three camera modules,” another market source is quoted as saying.
“And since iris recognition requires a long range camera, the smartphone, if fitted with the camera, needs a completely different design from previous models,” he noted.
New information comes shortly Lee Young-hee, an executive vice president of Samsung Electronics, in a recent interview revealed the company was testing the possibility of adding iris recognition technology, but nothing has been confirmed.
It's notable several global smartphone makers are working on fingerprint scanner after Apple launched the tech with its iPhone 5S. LG Electronics is reportedly working on G3 with a fingerprint scanner. LG's fingerprint scanner will be very similar to what we saw on the HTC One Max.

“The incredible content and tools available for iPad provide teachers with new ways to customise learning unlike ever before,” says Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “We can’t wait to see how teachers in even more countries will create their new lesson plans with interactive textbooks, apps and rich digital content.”
iBooks Textbooks features interactive animations, rotating 3D diagrams, flick-through photo galleries and tap-to-play videos. It has about 25,000 educational titles created by independent publishers, teachers and leading education services companies, including new educational content from Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press and Hodder Education.

In leveraging the entire educational ecosystem of iPad, creating my own iBooks Textbooks and iTunes U courses, and pulling in apps like History: Maps of the World, studying history has suddenly become a creative, dynamic and truly transformative experience for my pupils.”

WhatsApp now has 430 million active users
WhatsApp now has 430 million active users, and has added 30 million users in the last couple of months. WhatsApp now sees about 50 billion messages sent and received on a daily basis.
Despite such impressive figures and influx of new instant messaging apps such as Line, WeChat, KakaoTalk and Snapchat, WhatsApp says it will not be showing advertisements. “We just want to focus on messaging. If people want to play games there are plenty of other sites and also a lot of great companies building services around advertising,” TechCrunch quotes co-founder and CEO Jan Koum as saying.
On asked about possible acquisition, he said: “When we started the company we wanted to build something for the long term and sustainable. It’s not hard to sell a company, but if you look at [leading online] companies today like Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Twitter, they didn’t sell. They stuck around and built a great offering for users.”
WhatsApp last month had announced reaching 400 million users milestone. The company then revealed users send more than 16 billion messages every day, receive 32 billion and send 500 million images every day.
Earlier this month, WhatsApp disclosed it had processed 54 billion total messages on News Year's Eve. WhatsApp is rapidly closing in on Facebook that has about 1.19 billion monthly active users.

'123456' replaces 'password' as the worst password of 2013

SplashData study of stolen passwords posted online in 2013 showed "123456" replacing "password" as the year's worst password.
'123456' replaces 'password' as the worst password of 2013
Online security firm Splash Data has released the Worst Passwords list for 2013, and the number sequence "123456" tops the list as the most common password among internet users. In the third place was the number 12345678, followed by "qwerty" and abc123.
SplashData stated that a major security breach involving Adobe software had highlighted the weak passwords among users of such Adobe products as Photoshop. Stricture Consulting Group decrypted the leaked Adobe passwords and released an estimate that almost 2 million of the more than 130 million users affected by the breach appeared to be using "123456" as a password.
Splash Data suggested that users should use a password application manager that organises and protects their passwords. Further, password should be of atleast eight characters or more and include mixed characters. The firm also suggests using passphrases with short words with spaces that are difficult to hack, but easy for the user to remember.
"Seeing passwords like 'adobe123' and 'photoshop' on this list offers a good reminder not to base your password on the name of the website or application you are accessing," said CEO Morgan Slain.
"As always, we hope that with more publicity about how risky it is to use weak passwords, more people will start taking simple steps to protect themselves by using stronger passwords and using different passwords for different websites," said SplashData.
Cyber Experts at Trustwave's SpiderLabs has recently discovered more than 2 million stolen passwords for websites including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google and Yahoo. The data affected 326,000 Facebook accounts, 59,000 Yahoo accounts, 60,000 Google accounts and approximately 22,000 Twitter accounts. The report highlighted the need for stronger internet passwords for users.

Previous leaks suggested that the Z2 will have a Qualcomm MSM8974AB processor with 3GB of RAM, 20.7-megapixel rear camera with Sony’s G Lens, and a 3,500mAh battery.

Sony Vaio Flip 13, 14 and 15 hybrid convertible laptops launched in India
It is a great day for Windows based hybrid machine lovers, as Sony has launched its new Vaio Flip line of hybrid convertible laptops. These machines have a unique new hinge design that lets users flip the screen around and use them as tablets. Going all out, Sony’s introduced not one, not two, but three varying sizes, with the Vaio Flip coming in 13, 14 and 15 inch flavours.

What’s common between the three variants is that they are all powered by Intel’s fourth generation processors and they all sport Sony’s Triluminous display technology on an IPS panel boasting a resolution of 1920x1080. The Vaio Fit 13 and 14 come with Intel i5 processors while the top end Vaio Fit 15 sports the most powerful Intel Core i7 processor. All but the top end model ship with 4GB of RAM, but for those looking for a little more punch, the top end model has double that amount.

While the insides of these new hybrids are rather tantalizing, what really sets these machines apart is the unique hinge design. The screen can flip backwards over a hinge that will allow users to not only lay it flat on the keyboard, but also have the screen flip all the way backwards, for presentation purposes.

The Hybrid machines start retailing at Rs. 94,990 for the base 14 inch model and can cost as high as Rs.1,19,990 for the top end 15 inch model. Interestingly, the 13 inch variant costs five thousand rupees more than the 14-inch variant.

Just yesterday, we reported that the Galaxy S5 will be featuring a fingerprint scanning technology and that Samsung has dropped the idea of having an iris scanner. Earlier rumours had indicated that the S5 will have a QHD display, an octa-core processor with 64-bit processing, a 16MP camera and water-proof technology.
In the past, Samsung has been criticised for using plastic for their flagship smartphone. Hopefully this time, we will get to see something new, as the Galaxy S3 and the S4 were a bit disappointing in terms of design and build quality.
