Ting: WGoogle Nexus 6 Release In Summer; Lenovo To Manufacture Next Nexus Smartphone

Google Nexus 6 release date is expected in summer with Lenovo taking the helm in making the next-generation Nexus smartphones.
Google Nexus 6 is speculated to launch between June and September this year. This is according to Analyst Eldar Murtazin based on Lenovo's new partnership with Google made by buying the Motorola Mobility.

The Chinese PC manufacturer's acquisition of the Motorola Mobility is almost complete. To get 6 percent interest, Lenovo has to pay $3 billion to Google.
"The stake worth $750 million is the third leg of the company's purchase agreement alongside $660 million in cash and a $1.5 billion, three-year promissory note," according to Apple Insider.
The report added Lenovo's acquisition of Motorola includes mostly of wide intellectual property portfolio rather than the hardware aspect of the business.
"Google sold Motorola's set-top box business soon after the original acquisition, and the Lenovo deal leaves Mountain View, Calif.-based Google with the lion's share of Motorola's patents as well as its secretive Advanced Research and Projects division," the report noted.

This business engagement which is almost complete sparked rumors that the next Nexus smartphone will be made under Lenovo-Motorola branding.
Analysts agreed this could be a good move for Google in reaching wider market, especially because of Lenovo's stance in Chinese market. If Lenovo will develop Nexus 6, it may reach millions of new buyers and further those in Asia.
If the reports proved to be true and Lenovo will indeed work on the Google Nexus 6, the smartphone may take after Lenovo K900 smartphone. The handset did not boast stellar specs and features. It packed a 5.5-inch full HD screen display and sported a Corning Gorilla Glass 2 for protection.
Under the hood, K900 is powered by a dual core Intel Atom chipset clocked at 2 GHz and 2500 mAh battery capacity. For the camera, Lenovo's handset has a 13 megapixel camera at the back and 2 megapixel front-facing camera. But there is a lot of room for improvement that may happen in Google's next-gen handset.

Moto G Vs Nexus 4: Which is a better Android smartphone?

The Motorola Moto G is a feature-packed yet affordable smartphone that can easily outrun other mid-range smartphone offerings from its top-tier rivals in the race. Not only does if offer better hardware but also runs almost stock Android on top, which reminds us of the LG Nexus 4. So at almost half the Nexus 4′s price, do we see the Moto G as a perfect replacement of the last generation Nexus model?

Design: The Moto G flaunts a beautiful design, which is certainly not exclusive or new, but is attractive for its price. In addition to that, it is available in a number of bright and appealing colored shells, which add value to the overall appearance of the phone. The LG Nexus 4, on the other hand, looks good with a smooth and clean design, and looks premium with its glass back. But the glass back makes the Nexus 4 more fragile while the Moto G comes across as being extremely sturdy.
Display: The LG Nexus 4 brings a 4.7-inch 768×1280 pixels resolution display with a pixel density of 331ppi and comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protective glass on top. The Moto G, on the other hand, comes with a slightly smaller display at 4.5-inch with 720p resolution (320ppi), which is both vibrant and crisp, and offers good viewing angles as well. And on top of that, it offers the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection which is obviously better than the older generation one seen on the Nexus 4. Now considering this, the Moto G in our books has a better display than the Nexus 4.
Hardware: Both the phones are powered by Qualcomm’s chipsets. The Moto G has a Snapdragon 400 quad-core Cortex-A7 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, which is coupled with 1GB of RAM, while running at the Nexus 4′s heart is a Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor with each Krait core clocked at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM, which makes it more powerful among the two smartphones, but at a comparatively higher price point.
Talking about the internal storage, both the Nexus 4 and Moto G comes sans mircoSD card support, but offer additional memory on cloud. Both the phones come with 8GB and 16GB of internal storage.
Software: This is one area where the Nexus 4 dominates. Being a Nexus smartphone, it was one of the first devices to get updated to Android 4.4 KitKat and the same can be expected with future updates as well. The Moto G meanwhile offers Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Having said that, Motorola has started rolling out the Android 4.4 KitKat update, which should be available on the Indian dual-SIM variant too.
Camera: The Moto G sports a 5-megapixel rear camera while the Nexus 4 gets an 8-megapixel rear snapper. Both of these come with auto-focus, flash and other regular editing and camera features. In addition to that, the Moto G supports HDR video recording as well. The Moto G’s camera might not come as good as the 8-megapixel camera on the Nexus 4, but none of the two phones have camera as their USP and are just mediocre in terms of performance. Both the phones come with a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera as well.
Additional Features: The Moto G comes with an array of additional features like nano-coating for waterproofing the phone’s external as well as internal parts, dual-SIM compatibility and others. You can read more about these here. The Nexus 4, on the other hand, does not come waterproof and support single SIM only. Though, it does offer wireless charging support, but the absence of a wireless charging port will not really affect Moto G’s performance or features. Then there is the things about battery – our Nexus 4 barely lasts for half-a-day while the Moto G promises a much higher battery performance, which seems to be the case during our initial use of the device.
Taking all these factors into account, the Moto G comes across as a better smartphone and comes at almost half the price of the Nexus 4. The Moto G is available at a ridiculously low price point starting from Rs 12,499 for 8GB variant, while the Nexus 4 still costs approximately Rs 22,490 on most online retail stores. The only reason to go for the Nexus 4 would be for the guarantee of receiving future Android updates before other third-party brands. If that is not one of your priorities, the Moto G offers more bang for the buck.

Nokia to launch low-cost Android phone this month – report

Nokia is preparing to release its first-ever smartphone running Google's Android OS, sources claim.
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the Finnish firm plans to unveil the device at this year's Mobile World Congress conference, which takes place in Barcelona on February 24-27.

The move comes as Microsoft inches closer to completing its €5.44bn acquisition of Nokia, which was first announced in September 2013.
Even before being gobbled up by Redmond, Nokia has lately relied exclusively on Windows Phone to power its smartphones, on the insistence of its CEO, former Microsoft man Stephen Elop.
But the WSJ's unnamed sources say the beleaguered former phone leader now plans to introduce a low-cost Android device to its lineup as a way of retaining customers on the low end of the market, where feature phones are gradually being edged out by entry-level smartphones.
Windows Phone is too resource-intensive to run on cheap hardware, these sources claim, which is why Nokia is turning to Android for its new, bargain-priced kit.
Not that you'll necessarily know the new device is an Android phone at first glance. Earlier reports have revealed what are purportedly leaked screenshots of Nokia's Android skin, and its UI appears heavily modified, with more than a passing similarity to Windows Phone.
In addition, the WSJ's sources claim that Nokia's Android device "won't promote some of the key Google-developed features" – which may mean it won't come preloaded with the Google Play store and its related services.
If that's the case, it would mean Nokia is taking a similar approach to Amazon, which bases its Kindle tablets on a custom fork of Android and bundles its own app store in place of Google Play.
It's not yet clear which countries Nokia plans to target with its Android device, but earlier reports have suggested that it wants to sell them in emerging markets such as India and China, while sticking to its Windows Phone–powered Lumia handsets in more affluent markets.

Rumor: Google may soon force OEMs to use recent versions of Android on new devices

If you were to go out and buy a new Android handset today, odds are it would at the very least come with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, especially when it comes to mid and low-end devices from major OEMs. But what about that ultra-low end handset from some lesser known brand or even a new budget device like the LG Optimus F3Q? For devices like these, you might be stuck with Android 4.1 — or worse.
According to a new report from Android Police, Google is preparing a change that could reduce the number of new handsets that ship with dramatically older versions of Android. The news comes from a leaked memo, and suggests that Google may soon force OEMs to use up-to-date Android versions on new devices if they want to qualify for Google Mobile Services.

If a manufacturer wants to release a handset with Google Play support, they’ll have to do better than Gingerbread or ICS.

Basically it works like this: starting this month, Google reportedly no longer will certify any Android device running anything lower than Android 4.2. Android 4.2’s approval window is then expected to close come April 24th, with Android 4.3’s approval window closing on July 31st.
So how will Google determine how long an “approval window” is open for each version of Android? According to the memo:

Each platform release will have a “GMS approval window” that typically closes nine months after the next Android platform release is publicly available. (In other words, we all have nine months to get new products on the latest platform after its public release.)

Considering Google generally releases two versions of Android a year, this means that Google is looking to ensure that new devices are never approved with anything that is more than two versions behind. Of course, devices often get approval long before the handset or tablet hits the market, so it’s still conceivable that newly released budget devices from smaller OEMs will run copies of Android that are as much as three versions behind.
It’s also important to note that Google will not strip a device of its certification just because an “approval window” has closed, so this change will not force OEMs to update their devices any faster.

So what does this change really mean? Who does it affect?

If this change doesn’t force quicker updates and really means that new devices could still ship with versions of Android that are at least three versions behind, what’s the point?
For those that buy mid and high-end devices from major manufacturers, this change will mean absolutely nothing to you. Where this change really matters is in emerging markets such as India. If a manufacturer in an emerging market wants to release a handset with Google Play support, they’ll have to do better than Gingerbread or ICS. This move also matters for budget consumers or non-techies in major markets.

Remember that Google has yet to confirm this report, so there’s still a possibility that this rumor could be false. We’ve reached out to our Android OEM contacts for comment and will update the post accordingly. Still, this rumor makes a lot of sense for Google.
For one thing, Google constantly talks about reaching the “next billion users” and it’s pretty obvious that these users are to be found in emerging and budget markets. If Google wants to reach these folks and give them a proper impression of Android, so they stick with the platform, they need to kill the perception of Android fragmentation. Helping put older versions of Android to pasture is certainly a good start.

We’ll never know where Nokia would be right now if it had chosen Android instead of Windows Phone as its mobile platform of choice. Instead, Samsung scared CEO Stephen Elop away from Google’s mobile OS and the rest, as they say, is history. Nokia will soon be out of the mobile phone business once it dumps its devices and services division onto Microsoft as part of a $7.2 billion deal, but the company apparently plans to make waves one last time by unveiling its first Android phone next month.
According to well-known gadget leaker @evleaks, Nokia will indeed launch the Android phone that has been making waves in the rumor mill for the past few months as the “Normandy.” The launch name will supposedly be “Nokia X” and in his latest Twitter post about the device, @evleaks claims to have uncovered the phone’s specs.
In line with a leak on Monday from a Vietnamese online retailer, @evleaks claims that the Nokia X will feature a dial-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4-inch WVGA display, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, microSD support, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 1,500 mAh battery, dual-SIM card support and six different color options. It also looks like the phone will not have access to the Google Play store, and will instead rely on a Nokia-run Android app store as well as third-party stores like the Amazon Appstore.
The Nokia X is expected to debut next month at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain. There’s still no word on pricing but judging from the specs and from Nokia’s current strategy in emerging markets, we can likely expect this phone to carry a shockingly low price tag.
